In the red corner is the devil himself, the father of lies and with ‘deceiver’ embroidered onto his robe.
In the blue corner the Son of God who said of himself “I am the way the truth and the life” He rides a white horse and has the words “Faithful and True” written on his robes.
In the crowd we sit and how do we decide who to support?
Enlightened people decide truth for themselves based on science (knowledge). ‘The ‘scientific method‘ has evolved over many centuries and has now come to be described in terms of a well-recognized and well-defined series of steps. First, information, or data, is gathered by careful observation of the phenomenon being studied. On the basis of that information a preliminary generalization, or hypothesis, is formed, usually by inductive reasoning, and this in turn leads by deductive logic to a number of implications that may be tested by further observations and experiments.
So rational people work out truth by where the facts take them? The problem with this is that we should be looking not at where it all ends but where it all starts. We decide for ourselves based on our beliefs where that journey starts, and is it not certain that by starting off in two directions we will arrive at different destinations? Instead God suggests we should decide if He is true before we plod through our life-long data gathering pilgrimage. Notice also that truth is closely linked to our behaviour:
“They that are perishing, perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness. But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God chose you to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth.”
The truth of the cosmos is not to be found in information and knowledge alone, at least not in a scientific sense. Real truth is the wisdom of understanding that there is a purpose and meaning to life, that good and evil are not fabrications for social necessity, that there is a duty for us all and a reckoning of each one of us. If this is truth then how does that determine who we cheer for in the ring?
